Lesson 1: Color mixing and the color in between
Objective. Help students feel how two colors combine, by finding the shade that sits exactly between them.
Age/level. Primary, ages 6 to 11. Materials. A device with a screen for the class display, paints or colored pencils for a follow-up.
Warm-up. Show two paint blobs, blue and yellow, and ask the class to predict the color halfway between them before you mix a little on paper.
Main activity. Open Huetween on the shared screen. Each round shows two shades and asks for the color exactly in between. Take a class vote on the midpoint before revealing it, then compare the on-screen answer with the physical mix from the warm-up. Expect them to diverge: the screen shows the visual midpoint, an interpolation between two lights, while mixing blue and yellow paint yields green. That gap between additive light and subtractive pigment is the point of the lesson, not a mistake. Connect the idea to the dimensions on the hue, saturation and lightness page.
Assessment. Watch whether children reason about hue and lightness together or only one; over-dark midpoints are a normal early habit.
Extension. Let pairs pick their own two colors and predict the midpoint before checking it in the game.
Lesson 2: Warm and cool colors
Objective. Build the vocabulary of warm and cool, and a quick instinct for judging whether one color is warmer or cooler than another.
Age/level. Primary, ages 6 to 11. Materials. Class display, sorting cards in various colors (optional).
Warm-up. Sort a handful of colored objects into a "warm" pile and a "cool" pile as a class, arguing the borderline cases aloud.
Main activity. Play Huember together, where each new color is judged warmer or cooler than the last. Take a class vote before each reveal and keep a shared streak going. Between rounds, ask children to name something in the room that matches the current color's temperature. Follow up with the color temperature reference page.
Assessment. Note who reliably calls clear differences and who needs the contrast widened. Wrong calls on near-neutral colors are expected and not a concern.
Extension. Have the class order three colors from coolest to warmest and justify the order.
Lesson 3: Hue, saturation and lightness
Objective. Train students to see color as three separable dimensions, hue, saturation, and lightness, rather than one impression.
Age/level. Middle and secondary, ages 11 to 16. Materials. Class display, optional printed color chips.
Warm-up. Show three versions of one photo, each altered on a single dimension, and ask which changed: the hue, the vividness, or the brightness.
Main activity. Play Huesort, where students arrange shuffled shades into a smooth gradient. Ask them to say which dimension is changing along the row before they sort, so the ordering rests on a named attribute. Assessment. Listen for students naming the changing dimension correctly, and watch where saturation and lightness get confused.
Extension. Ask students to build a gradient that changes two dimensions at once and describe it.
Lesson 4: Matching a color precisely
Objective. Develop the eye for matching a target color by adjusting hue, saturation, and lightness together.
Age/level. Middle, ages 11 to 14. Materials. Class display with a shared screen.
Warm-up. Hold up a colored card and ask the class to describe it in three words, one for each dimension, before anyone reaches for a screen.
Main activity. Use Huekle, the flagship game, where the class narrows to the day's color across five tries. After each guess, discuss the feedback aloud: was the guess too warm, too pale, too dark? Lesson 5: Spotting the smallest difference
Objective. Sharpen the eye for very small color differences, the perceptual root of what designers measure as color difference.
Age/level. Secondary and adult, ages 13 and up. Materials. Class display with a good screen in even light.
Warm-up. Show two nearly identical swatches and ask the class to point to any difference, then reveal whether one existed at all.
Main activity. Open Huefork, where students find the odd shade and judge how much lighter or darker it is, over rounds that get subtler. Ask them to say the direction of the difference before locking in, which turns spotting into measuring. Connect the idea to the color difference and delta-E page.
Assessment. Track how subtle a difference students can still call reliably, and whether they can name its direction.
Extension. In pairs, one student sets two swatches slightly apart on paper; the partner judges the direction of the difference.
Lesson 6: Color memory
Objective. Strengthen the ability to hold a color in mind across a silent gap and reproduce it accurately.
Age/level. Middle, ages 11 to 14. Materials. Class display with a shared screen.
Warm-up. Show a color for three seconds, hide it, wait five seconds, then have students point to the closest match on a printed strip.
Main activity. Use Hueecho, which flashes a color, pauses, then asks students to reproduce its lightness from memory with a slider. Focus the class on what they do during the pause: naming the color to themselves tends to steady the memory. Extend the pause over successive rounds to raise the challenge. Assessment. Notice who rehearses the color during the pause; that habit predicts steadier reproduction.
Extension. Show a distracting second color during the pause, then reproduce the first, testing memory under interference.
Lesson 7: The color wheel and harmony
Objective. Give students a working feel for the color wheel and the main harmony relationships: complementary, analogous, and triadic.
Age/level. Secondary, ages 13 and up. Materials. Class display, a printed color wheel (optional).
Warm-up. On a printed wheel, have students point to the color opposite a given hue and predict what it will look like beside it.
Main activity. Play Huewheel, where each round asks students to find a complement, analogous set, split-complement, or triad on the wheel. Have them name the relationship aloud before locking in. Support the discussion with the color wheel relationships and color harmony schemes pages.
Assessment. Watch whether students can locate each relationship by reasoning about position rather than trial and error.
Extension. Ask students to design a small poster palette using one named scheme from the lesson.
Lesson 8: Complementary colors and afterimages
Objective. Connect complementary pairs to the way the eye works, using the afterimage as a striking demonstration of the opponent process.
Age/level. Secondary, ages 13 and up. Materials. Class display, a bright colored shape and a white wall or page.
Warm-up. Have students stare at a bright red shape for twenty seconds, then look at a white surface and describe the ghostly cyan afterimage that appears.
Main activity. Play Huewheel focused on complements, and connect each pair to the afterimage color the class just saw: the eye fatigues on one channel and rebounds toward the opposite. The color afterimages and the opponent process page explains why. Keep it wonder-first, then name the mechanism.
Assessment. Check whether students can predict an afterimage color from a starting hue, a sign the complement idea has landed.
Extension. Try afterimages with several colors and chart each starting hue against its afterimage.
Lesson 9: Sorting shades into a value scale
Objective. Practise ordering several shades by lightness alone, which requires holding and comparing more than two at once.
Age/level. Primary and middle, ages 8 to 13. Materials. Class display, gray-scale chips (optional).
Warm-up. Hand out five gray chips and have small groups lay them from lightest to darkest, arguing any swaps.
Main activity. Use Huesort set on a single hue, so students arrange shades into a smooth light-to-dark gradient. Encourage them to squint, which suppresses hue and reveals value, before deciding. Connect the skill to composition with the value, saturation and composition page.
Assessment. Note whether students re-check adjacent pairs when unsure, a good self-correcting strategy, and where close values cause errors.
Extension. Add more shades, or ask students to slot a new shade into an already-sorted value scale.
Lesson 10: Simultaneous contrast
Objective. Show that a color is never seen alone: its neighbours change how it looks, which is the heart of Albers' teaching.
Age/level. Secondary and adult, ages 13 and up. Materials. Class display, two identical small swatches on different backgrounds.
Warm-up. Show the same gray square on a black background and a white background and ask the class which gray is lighter, then reveal they are identical.
Main activity. Play Hueseam, where a wide bar hides a faint seam and students slide to the edge they can just make out. Discuss how the surrounding color makes the step easier or harder to see, the same effect as the warm-up. The simultaneous contrast page gives the underlying account.
Assessment. Watch whether students account for the background when judging the seam rather than the swatch in isolation.
Extension. Have students design a small trick where one color reads as two by changing its surround.
Lesson 11: Color contrast for accessibility
Objective. Turn contrast perception into a design skill by connecting it to accessibility: text and controls must have enough contrast for everyone to read.
Age/level. Secondary and adult, ages 13 and up. Materials. Class display, a sample web page or poster with mixed contrast.
Warm-up. Show three text-on-color samples and vote on which is hardest to read, then introduce the idea that this can be measured, not just felt.
Main activity. Use Hueseam to sharpen the eye for small contrast steps, then apply it to design: open the color contrast and accessibility page and check whether the sample from the warm-up would pass the WCAG contrast ratios. Extension. Have students fix a failing text-and-background pair so it meets the WCAG AA ratio.
Lesson 12: Closing measurement and reflection
Objective. Close the unit with a personal, low-stakes measurement and a short reflection, so learners see their color eye as something they can describe and revisit.
Age/level. All ages, adaptable. Materials. Class display, a simple reflection sheet or notebook.
Warm-up. Each learner privately guesses how small a color difference they think they can see, from obvious to very subtle.
Main activity. Use Huefork, which returns a personal color threshold, the smallest shade difference the learner can reliably call. Each learner records their number as a private baseline, not a class ranking, on the understanding that it also depends on the screen and the light. Then they write two sentences: one thing that felt easier than at the start, and one to keep practising.
